History of the Buderim Concert Band PDF Print E-mail

                                                        Founder Barry Rodgers

The formation of the Buderim Concert Band was the result of one man's vision. Barry Rodgers believed that Buderim should have its own community band. He established the Band in 1998 largely from school leavers with some older members joining in. It was originally named the Buderim Community Concert Band and was affiliated with the Buderim War Memorial Community Association.

Soon after, John Hadlow was invited to be Musical Director and Conductor. Both Barry and John had extensive Australian Army band experience and John introduced the band to parade marching.

The Band's first performance was on Anzac Day, 1998. Barry still holds the position of Founder of the Band and often drops in to support the clarinets in his role of First Clarinet when needed. He is always appreciated when he is able to come.

In 2004, the name of the Band was changed to its present name: Buderim Concert Band. In 2005, it was incorporated as a separate entity although it maintained its collaborative ties with the Buderim War Memorial Association.

The numbers of the Band has fluctuated over the years but starts 2015 in a strong position with 30 to 40 playing members and support members. We are now finding second generation musicians coming along with their parents which puts the Band in a strong position for the future. Some of the young early members have gone on to study music at a tertiary level and now have professional careers.

Between 2002 and the present, the Band has had several changes of Musical Director with many highly qualified conductors filling the role.  Our current Musical Director is Fiona Glen supported by Assistant Musical Director Damian Bowden.

In October 2015 the Beginners Band program commenced under the leadership of Myron Cheney with 20 new starters wanting to learn a musical instrument. This program has allowed people of all ages (from 9 to 70+) and walks of life to have the opportunity to learn a brass, woodwind or percussion instrument. It was with great pleasure that we were able to give our first public performance at the Nambour Tramfest in October 2016. Due to our progress, this band will be known as the Buderim Development Band in 2017.

Many Band members have contributed to the administration of the Band when serving on the management committee. However all members contribute in numerous ways to ensure the band stays strong.

New members are always welcomed from the novice to the very experienced. Our friendly family atmosphere is conducive to young players and support for the less experienced is second to none. Parents of young players are encouraged to attend rehearsals and join in a cuppa at the half time break.
